It implies that years of training can enable dancers to suppress signals from the balance organs in the inner ear, which might otherwise make them fall over.

The findings, published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, could help to improve treatment for patients with chronic dizziness, which affects 1 in 4 Britons at some point during their lives.

Normally, the feeling of dizziness stems from the vestibular organs in the inner ear. These fluid-filled chambers sense rotation of the head through tiny hairs that sense the fluid moving. Ballet dancers can perform multiple pirouettes with little or no feeling of dizziness. Researchers at Imperial College London recruited 29 female ballet dancers to compare against 20 women rowers of similar age and fitness levels. The volunteers were spun around in a chair in a dark room.

They were asked to turn a handle in time with how quickly they felt like they were still spinning after they had stopped. The researchers also measured eye reflexes triggered by input from the vestibular organs. In dancers, both the eye reflexes and their perception of spinning lasted a shorter time than in the rowers. The data from the dancers' brain scan could be used to help those who suffer from chronic dizziness.

Ballet dancers seem to be able to train themselves not to get dizzy, so we wondered whether we could use the same principles to help our patients.

The brain scans revealed differences between the groups in two parts of the brain: The area in the cerebellum was smaller in dancers. Dr Seemungal thinks this is because dancers would be better off not using their vestibular systems, relying instead on highly co-ordinated pre-programmed movements. Consequently, the signal going to the brain areas responsible for perception of dizziness in the cerebral cortex is reduced, making dancers resistant to feeling dizzy.

It takes a village: Hillary Clinton layers a scarf, shawl No St Patrick's Day tipple for me! I function on a purely primal level, feeding, tending and occasionally sleeping.

I have never, since the age of 11, had that distance from my art, mentally or physically. One night I catch sight of myself in a mirror, about to feed Zeph at 3am. But I have never felt happier. With my free arm, I attempt a balletic manoeuvre, and a wilted cabbage leaf drops out of my bra on to the carpet. I am advised to take things easy post-caesarean, but after five weeks I am itching to be more active.

With Zeph in a sling, I bumble around the house attempting chores and sneaking in an occasional arabesque. I am still a dancer. The main difference so far is the shift of priorities. I am typing this with my left hand, Zeph on one breast.

Act 4 of Swan Lake just came on the radio. It made Zeph smile — well, it may have been wind, but it played and she smiled. I feel complete bliss sitting here. I love feeding Zeph. But it is not going to be an easy feat to return to my former body. Weight loss is especially hard given my increased breastfeeding appetite. I control portions of full-fat products and reduce my sugar intake — such a bore and not really compatible with feeding, when a biscuit is just what you want.

Breakfast Low-sugar granola with hazelnut milk, half a grapefruit, black coffee sweetened with honey. Morning snack A handful of blueberries, banana or an oat biscuit.

Lunch Eggs, spinach and soda bread; or a mixed salad with tuna or sardines, or soup. Afternoon snack Corn cakes with nut butter or honey and fruit.

Dinner Something hearty and protein-based — grilled or baked meat or fish with brown rice. Lots of vegetables, as many home-grown as possible. Drink As much filtered water as possible, some glasses of coconut water, a few cups of tea, and the occasional small red wine with dinner. Zeph is three months old. I went for a swim this morning.

Twelve weeks post-caesarean, I really need to start moving again. Out in the garden on this sunny August afternoon, I start some basic ballet stretches with Zeph in her sling. I want to give them maximum time to settle first. I aim to address them at the five- or six-month mark. Muscle memory is coming into play. My professional appetite is still there, and my passion for dance — but so now is Zeph, and she is my everything.
