The coax in your rv is just fine for Satellite. Most of the newer RVs that are into the 20th century have a satellite cable coming in and it is marked. However, the basics are that the RG6 cable that is connected to the satellite dish must go directly to the satellite receiver.

It cannot go through any splitters, amplifiers etc. Cable service and off the air antenna service can use splitters and amplifiers. All that said, it would be nice if the RV manufactures would run in a couple of RG6 lines to make everything easier to use for the owners.

When they manufacture several thousand RVs if they save a couple of dollars on each one it adds up to more profits. However the biggest issue facing the install is the input cable. It must not be connected to any other items along the path.

The coax carries the voltage to the dish and the signal back to the receiver. From there you have lots of options of producing a television picture. Think of your satellite dish as a lawn sprinkler for lack of a better analogy. You have a hose coax that goes to the faucet receiver. The voltage from the receiver goes out to the sprinkler head.

The head is the dish and it consumes a bit of DC power. It does not spray out anything in this case. The incoming signal hits the dish and is amplified because the signal is extremely weak.

That signal travels down the hose coax to the receiver and then is converted into a television signal. If the hose is kinked, is too small, is stepped on, or is to long it will not work well. The RG 6,- whatever number you want simply refers to the optimum hose that should be used.

Other hoses will work but not as well. So the wall plates block the hose and tees can literally run the signal to the ground. An Ohmeter is a very good tool for deciding if there is anything connected to the coax. Either the coax is open or not. Open means nothing electrical between the center wire and the outside wire. Disconnect both ends and check with the meter.

Then short one end or the other and check the other end to see if it shows a short. If it passes this test connect directly to the reciver and dish and test. Once it passes that test you can then move on to other options. I hope the folks I quoted and disagreed with do not take offense. I offer this with almost 40 years of ET experience and helping folks.

My RV works just fine on satellite with the RG6 that was installed in it. My 5Ver worked just fine with the RG6 that was installed in it.

I suspect most of these problems are just operator problems. Yes, RG58 52 coax with a large impedance mismatch would probably still work but why use it. Just connect your cables up correctly and satellite will work.

I owned a HR MH and used a portable satellite dish with it. I did not change any coax but I did add 2 "diplexers".

A splitter will not work but the "diplexer" will sove your problems. Here is the simplest explaination of the solution. Just making a point that just about any coax will work. The term will not or cannot work is often posted and is incorrect.

Techs will argue that twist on connectors "do not work", solder on connectors "do not work", and in the satellite install industry they insist on changing to compression type connectors if they are doing the install. Just saying to folks. You don't have to rip out the coax in your rv "because it WON'T work". I could run satellite using zip cord but not for a very long distance. I agree totally on using the correct coax if at all possible.

Every trailer I have owned I have been able to use the existing wiring to run my satellite. The cable input goes to the amp and I know that satellite will not work this way because of the amp etc. Also, if your band wants to convert a demo tape into MP3 format for posting on the Web, you can reverse the hookup — that is, run the sound out from your stereo into the microphone jack of your computer. If you just want to listen to music you find on the Web, you may find it easier to just invest in some high-end computer speakers.
